As you browse the web, residual traces of your activities online slowly build up. Often these are simply browser cookies, history of visited web pages, and files in your browser's cache folder. Sometimes, this also includes parasite software, such as spyware that has made its way into your computer system.
Unlike spyware removal tools, which can identify and remove the parasites they know about after they have infiltrated your system, Sandboxie takes a more pro-active approach to ensure the integrity of your computer system. This is accomplished by isolating and quarantining changes to your computer system as they occur, rather than after the fact.
When you run Internet Explorer under the control of Sandboxie -- this is termed "sandboxing a program" -- any changes that should have been made in your system are instead recorded in the sandbox. The sandbox is a special folder in your hard disk that keeps all these changes. Sandboxie shows Internet Explorer a view of your computer system that merges the contents of the sandbox with how your system really looks, making Internet Explorer believe the changes were really effected.
